My boyfriend, Chris, gave me this turtle. I know three months doesn’t sound like a long time but I’ve been in love with him forever. We met last year, freshman year, in a class we both were forced to take. The way we ended up talking is, he wrote his number down and handed it to me without saying a word, then left. I literally texted him the next period. The first time we ever hung out, it was at the town carnival. Apparently he was going to ask me to be his girlfriend that night. The problem was, I had a boyfriend. He wasn’t aware of this until that night and of course, he didn’t ask. One day, I was telling him about how turtles are my favorite animal & he jokingly said he’d give me one. Soon after, we drifted apart, he starting dating someone else. Even though I had a boyfriend, when I found out, I was crushed. I didn’t know why at the time. I was confused because I thought I was in love with my current boyfriend. Soon after we starting talking again. Both in relationships with other people. We became best friends. We basically told each other everything. Sophomore year started. Eventually, him and his girlfriend didn’t work out, and broke up. One day, he told me he wanted to kill himself. On Christmas day. I had ditched my family that day so the second I found out, I insisted that he come over right away. He ended up spending the night. That night, he told me he loved me & we kissed. It was the first time I experienced a “spark” when you kiss someone. I’ve kissed plenty of people & this kiss was different. I was nervous and excited and my heart was beating at a pace of a million per second. That’s when I realized that I had always been in love with him. I broke up with my current boyfriend a week later. The very next day, Chris got off my bus stop after school and said he had a surprise for me, but he couldn’t tell me until we got to my room. So, we walked to my house, ran upstairs, shut the door, and he blurted out “will you be my girlfriend?” It was the last thing I expected and I was so excited I could cry. I literally said yes like “whAT YES” and I hugged him really tight. One day, after about a month and a half of being the happiest girl ever, he said he had another surprise while at school. We have lunch together, so I went to lunch wondering what it was. He told me to close my eyes and turn around, so I did. When I turned back around, there was this turtle on the table. I was so happy, I hugged him really tight and said thank you about a million times. He said it was hand carved and he had it since he was really young. He was going to give it to me last year but the reason he didn’t is because he had a girlfriend. He said he gave it to me because he always promised me he’d give me a turtle and he didn’t want to break it.
